What the launch trailer shows

  • Official Jason talks about his past for the first time: he got into trouble in the Army and left early. Flashbacks show him as a soldier.

The story

    Chapter 1 Official

    Lucia: out of prison

    Lucia’s father taught her to fight almost as soon as she could walk, and life has kept swinging at her ever since. Standing up for her family landed her in Leonida Penitentiary, the state prison. Getting out was mostly luck. The first trailer starts right there, with Lucia in prison clothes facing her parole officer. Her plan for the future is simple: only smart moves from now on.

    Chapter 2 Official

    Jason: the ex-soldier from the Keys

    Jason grew up around grifters and small-time crooks. The Army was supposed to get him away from his troubled teens. But he got into trouble there and left early, as he says in the launch trailer. He ended up in the Leonida Keys doing what he knows best: working for local drug runners. He rents a room from Brian Heder, a smuggler from the golden age of the Keys. All Jason wants is an easy life, but things keep getting harder.

    Chapter 3 Official

    Two against the world

    Lucia and Jason become a couple and a team. The first trailer shows them as a modern Bonnie and Clyde, masked up and robbing a store together. In the game you can switch between them at any time, even in the middle of a heist. Each has their own strengths, friends and problems.

    Chapter 4 Official

    An easy job that goes wrong

    The two have always known the deck is stacked against them. Then an easy score goes wrong. Suddenly they are on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, caught in a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the whole state of Leonida. If they want to get out alive, they have to rely on each other more than ever.

    The people they need

    Along the way they meet Brian and Lori Heder, who smuggle through their boatyard, Jason’s buddy Cal, the Vice City boss Boobie Ike with his strip club, real estate and recording studio, the music hustler Dre’Quan Priest with his rap duo Real Dimez, and veteran bank robber Raul Bautista, who is always looking for talent. Money matters a lot: some parts of the story need a certain amount of cash.

    How it ends is partly up to you

    How well Jason and Lucia’s relationship goes affects the story and the ending. You can play it romantic or more like friends. Rockstar has not said more about the ending. One Rockstar developer needed about 80 hours for the story and side content.

Leonida is Rockstar’s take on Florida, about three times the size of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map. The pictures come from our own freely designed map. From the November 19 release we’ll show the real game world.

Vice City

The big city in the southeast, Rockstar’s take on Miami: neon, high-rises, beaches and clubs.

  • Official Rockstar calls Vice City America’s “sun and fun capital.”

Leonida Keys

The island chain in the south, Rockstar’s take on the Florida Keys.

  • Official Bars, beach chairs and good vibes, but Rockstar warns that the waters are dangerous.
  • Official Shown: seaplanes, long bridges between the islands, yachts, diving and kayaking.
  • Official Brian Heder has been smuggling drugs here since the “golden era,” together with his wife Lori through their boatyard. Brian is Jason’s landlord.

The vast swampland, Rockstar’s take on the Everglades.

  • Official Rockstar calls it an “untamable jewel.” Gators are the main attraction, but deeper in the mangroves lurk “far deadlier predators.”

Six wanted stars

Six stars instead of five. The police only come in force once someone reports your crime.

The police recognize you

Your clothes, looks and car give you away. Wear a mask, change outfits, swap cars.

Criminal profile

The game remembers how you behave. Needless violence counts against you, violence in missions does not.

Your body changes

Fast food makes you heavier, the gym builds muscle, too little sleep shows on your face.

Stealing cars takes tools

Old cars open with a slim jim, new luxury cars need a key cloner.

Blow or crack safes

Blowing a safe is fast but breaks valuables. Cracking it pays more but takes longer.

Fewer guns on you

You only carry a few weapons. The rest stays in your trunk.

Switch any time

Switch between Lucia and Jason, even in the middle of a heist.

Focus mode and Dead Eye

Focus highlights useful things nearby, Dead Eye slows down aiming like in Red Dead.

Radio on foot

With headphones on your phone you can listen to radio and podcasts while walking.

Money matters more

Some story parts cost money. Earn it with cars, fences, store robberies and bank jobs.
